How to prevent Sony trinitron passing from video mode to TV when changing chanels? (it sound stupid but look at the message)

Hi there,
I have the following problem with my Sony Tinitron while using the Panasonic VCR with Picture in Picture option:
When I watch the video chanel ("->1" sign on screen - VCR is attaceh on on it} and I press the P in P function on the VCR, I get the small frame with the same chanell running in it. So far is good. But when I then try to change the channel on TV, it goes out of ->1 mode and goes into TV mode. Result: I don't see the small picure anymore - of course because it goes out of ->1 mode where the VCR is. If I now go into that mode (->1), I get the new channel running in both screens (I mean on screen and in the small frame). This could sound so normal to anyone, even me but on my friend's old and ugly TV this is not the case - when he gets into P in P mode, by changing the channels he is only changing the contents in the small frame! I could burst into tears - I have a Sony, he has some shitty TV, and he is laughing in my face!
Does anyone understands what I am talking about?
Please help with suggestions.
