Laptop DVD video <--> TV video problems

We have a Compaq Armada laptop that we just today tried to use to view a DVD on our TV. We bought the appropriate cable to connect it all up, it all seemed to work, but, for one odd reason or another, the area that the feature was playing in just showed up as a magenta box, but everything else was viewable.
What are we doing wrong? Is some sort of converter required?
