S-Video only comes through in B/W

Maybe one of you experts can help me since no one at the store knows anything about what they are selling...
I have two DVD players, each connected to a Sony TV. Whenever I've tried to hook it up using the S-Video cables, all that comes through is black and white pictures. I've tried connecting it through the receiver also, and I get the same thing.
Anybody ever hear of this???
