Help! Friend's new Onkyo DV-601 has problems playing redbook cd's.

It won't recognize most discs at all, and those that it does, may play a few seconds before locking up. Mostly, we just get "disc error". It is a brand new player, and when first set up it played cds just fine. DVD's are no problem.
Any thoughts on what might be wrong?
