picture quality in tv- what works, what needs work?

Hi,
I have begun vaguely thinking about a new TV. One of the things I have noticed with the line doublers (mostly in rptvs- I have not seen the expensive external doublers like Faroudja) is motion artifacts.
My exeprience with computers games that simulate aerial dogfighting has made me quite sensitive to the prescence of these problems. Based on that, I believe these doublers slow the frame rate 10-30%. Is anyone familiar with this? Or for that matter, any other issues related to picture quality that concerns you? In the 'what works' category.....if i was buying today and I could afford the $5K, the Pioneer Elite 55" is a very sweet tv.
