Marantz SR-8000 direct mode

24.4.254.2

I'd like to be able to use my subwoofer while listening to lps in the source direct mode. The sub has speaker level and line level inputs. If I have the sub connected with both a line level RCA for 5.1 sources, and regular speaker wires in parallel with my front speakers for source direct listening AT THE SAME TIME, will this hurt anything ? Obviously, if I'm in source direct mode the only signal the sub will get is from the speaker level inputs, no problem. But if I'm watching a DVD, the sub will see a line level signal (the LFE signal), as well as the speaker level inputs from my stereo speakers.
Also, when I hook up the reciever to the sub with speaker cable, should I use the same guage as what's already going to the fronts or does it matter ? The sub's manual states that the reciever will not see a load when using speaker level inputs to the sub. I'm not sure if there is enough room under the binding posts of the marantz for 2 sets of 12 AWG wire. Thanks for any tips. And Merry Christmas !
