DVD player to play more than one region coding???

Hi there....
I have a friend ask me this question and I didn't know the answer... soooo what better place to find the answer than right here in the good ol' asylum. He wants to buy a DVD player to take home with him to give to his family in India. i warned him about region encoding of DVDs and how they won't play on players that are designed to decode a different region.
My question is this... is there a DVD player on the market in the US or otherwise can be found over the web cheaply that will play DVD's made for India?? My understanding is that electronics are either hard to come by or are really expensive in india.... so he wanted to get it here and bring it home to his family... they will then buy dvds in india... is it possible???
