macroblocking

Macroblocking is technically not what most people call the black (low IRE) splotchiness that can be seen with certain DVD player/display combinations when playing a DVD. I can get you an exact definition of "macroblocking", but I doubt it's necessary in the context that the question was asked.

The new Faroudja deinterlacing chips (the FL23xx series) exhibit this splotchiness (commonly referred to as "macroblocking") in dark scenes and scenes that are fading up/fading down. Their older deinterlacing solution (the FL22xx series) did not exhibit this flaw. Genesis, who owns Faroudja, does not have a solution to this problem as of yet.
