Subwoofer integration query

Friend of mine has just finished a renovation in a bar he owns and finds himself in possession of a pair of passive sub-woofers.
He'd like to integrate them into his modest HT 5.1 Yamaha-based system and he's asked me how to best handle this.
This is all fine but I'm primarily a 2 channel guy and although I have an HT system of sorts my only experience with low frequency drivers is with my powered sub that just plugs in and does its thing.
He'd like to integrate these subs with his rear speakers and I don't have clue one about how to handle any of this.
But I promised I'd try to find out and you guys and gals are the HT folks.
