Try a different DVI-capable DVD player. I do vaguely recall a Meridian which would not upsample 480p to 720p DVI....

and I thought it might be related to keeping the recording industry happy. I'm using a video processor which upsamples everything to the displays native resolution via DVI (720P for the Sharp 10K). There's even some fine adjustments on frequencies (nominal 60 Hz) to address slight variations in projectors but I don't know of any which might create the symptoms you describe.

Maybe when I find the time, I'll try to mess around with the processor to see if I can duplicate your symptoms.
