No reason why you cannot simply use a 6channel analog preamp BUT you will find these to be pricier than a receiver and comparable to many pre/pros. However, I generally prefer analog pres.If you need to decode DD from a cable box, however, you will need a decoder as, afaik, all STBs have only digital and analog/stereo outs.
