Lossless Audio with HDTV

The Sony announcement of a HD DVD player states that the highest resolution audio options (lossless) will only work with the hdmi output.
I'm not aware of any pre/pros that have hdmi inputs.
I'm also not anxious to replace my $3K pre/pro. I called Sunfire and they will not offer a mod to add an hdmi input.
Will all HD players only pass lossless high resolution audio through the hdmi output?
Will someone build a black box that has hdmi input and analog outputs?
