Most HDTVs have 768 lines today

I agree that DVD players that upconvert to 1080 lines usually need to downconvert to 720 or 768 lines to match the resolution of the display.

And with 1080i, I suspect that the downconversion is tyically to 768i.

I agree that its often much better to upconvert to 720p, rather than 1080i, if you have that option.
