try connecting speaker wires

I'm guessing that you tried to power it up just to test whether or not it would come on after storage. Did you ever power it up (when you first got it, years ago) without speakers connected? If so, did it not go into protection mode? If you did and it didn't, check for any frayed wires around the speaker terminals. Even a sliver touching two of the wrong terminals at the same time could trigger the protection circuit. Check the input (RCA) terminals as well.

If all's clear, try connecting speakers to the proper terminals and see if it will power up correctly.
