Sony DVDs don't play on my Cal Audio 2500

Hi -
My partner brought home Memoirs of a Geisha tonight - a two disc set from Sony. I have a Cal Audio DVD 2500 - certainly not SOTA but not all that long in the tooth either - or is it?
At any rate, Disc 1 with the movie did not register with the player - in fact after whirring for awhile it reported "no disc". Disc 2 with the 'extra' features of course worked perfectly...
Wassup?
Is this an example of the Sony copyright protection I have been reading about? Is there a work around for an older player?
Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this problem - what can I say, seems pretty short-sighted to me...
