DVD Recommendations?

I have a new 55" Hitachi plasma and bought a HDMI upscale DVD player from Samsung (low-end). The DVD player and TV are about 5 weeks old and they seemed to work fairly well together, but now I'm getting ghosting, burn-in and generally low PQ. I'm almost 100% sure it isn't the TV as it looks fine through cable.
Some have recommended the Oppo 971, but others like the new LG DVD player. Any recommendations or thoughts?
