Is there anything I can determine about a downloaded

video by the .avi suffix? There is a TV show I missed, not available on DVD in the US, or in Region 1 DVD's elsewhere in the world. I am downloading it from the 'net, in .avi format. Does this mean it will or won't be in PAL? Could an .avi format be region encoded?
