discs for video calibration

You should look into Joe Kane's Digital Video Essentials. Plenty of patterns and a good bit of information on how the system as a whole works. I've seen the disc advertised for $12 (just type digital video essentials in the pricegrabber.com search function). There's a .pdf available on the home page that provides a description of the test patterns.

For those more advanced, the GetGray disc is the one to use. Just be advised that it's not for those who are new to calibration. There is a .pdf associated with the program, but "How to..." is not a theme of the document. The "disc" is actually software that is downloaded and then burned to a recordable DVD. A "donation" of $25 is made to the site and download keys are sent to your email address. This disc is confirmed to be 100% accurate re: MPEG-2 encoding. On the home page is a link to the ongoing discussion at AVS Forum (it's about 60 pages long at the moment), a .zip of the documentation and a link to what the test patterns look like when they appear on your display.
