The subwoofer will sum both RCA inputs to mono anyway, so you can use either; you don't have to use both.

However, depending on your system, you might get better integration by using the speaker outputs, since with some systems the volume control doesn't work with the subwoofer out correctly. But the high-level (speaker) inputs are more prone to distortion (any amplification distortion will be reproduced and reamplified by the subwoofer's amp).

If you can, experiment with both ways and see what you prefer. But you don't really need the Y adapter. Feel free to put one in if it makes you feel better though. Rat Shack sells 'em for about $2.
