I doubt anybody can really answer this at this time, although DVD does seem more likely to become the standard in video than DVD does in audio (I think there's a better than even chance that all the infighting over format and copyright protection will kill any new audio format for the indeterminate future). DVD video stands a good chance if they get dvd-r out sometime soon. Most "common folk" I know use their vhs machines to time shift at least part of the time and they aren't going to trade them in on a DVD that doesn't record any more than they did for laserdisc.
