Problems with DVD and Onkyo DS-939: audio distorts and goes away!

I've had the Onkyo 939 for about 2 years and only recently bought a DVD player (Panasonic 120). While playing the last couple of DVD movies (both encoded with English 5.1 Dolby Digital), the audio suddenly distorts and goes away. It comes back if I change to another mode on the receiver (say from AC-3 standard to AC-3:Drama), only to repeat this after some more time!
I can't (seem to) duplicate this by playing CDs on my DVD player or even non-Dolby Digital encoded DVDs. I use a coax cable for my DVD to receiver connection. My fronts are Bose 901s, center, sub and rears are Infinitys.
Any thoughts?
