Another HDMI question

TVs, VCRs, DVD players, Home Theater systems and more.

I'm probably going to be buying an HDTV in the near future, as well as a new DVD player since none of our existing machines are progressive scan/component video. It looks likely that both the TV and the player will have HDMI jacks.
If I use an HDMI cable from the player to the TV it will be used for video only. I will use my 2 channel system for audio. Will using RCAs for L&R channel audio to my preamp work OK with the video going though the HDMI? Would I be just as well of using component video cables?
