Projector Lamp Question

I have a circa 1998 Sanyo PLC 250 projector which has been lying unused for the past 3 years. Recently, I played it only to find a pronounced honeycomb effect at my usual distance of approx 14 feet. Any ideas as to what the reason could be? The built in lamp life bulb does not light up, which indicates lamp replacement is not really on the cards...
