Most such problems are due to improper setup.

Have your accurately calibrated/adjusted the levels with a pink-noise source and a SLM? If that is done right, the only problems with balance that I have encountered are intentional. Good room acoustics also help and, for multichannel, are, ideally, less lively than for stereo (where the room has to support the spatial illusion).
