"When I use the BD player to play music CDs, I notice that all signals are handled as 44 Khz or 48 khz at the most, even for recordings at a higher rate."

CDs are 44.1kHz only: What CDs do you have that output 48kHz? Do you have the ReMaster setting turned on? Nearly all movies on DVD and Blu-ray will show 48kHz.

There are numerous 24/96 music DVDs (for example, Classic Records' DAD discs) and DVD-A discs (though some limit the digital output to 48kHz due to copy protection) which have encoded sampling rates of 96kHz. These should be output as 96kHz, unless you limit the digital output to 48kHz.
