sorry to bother Philips DVDR 75 and asking for rec's on new one

I have this old player used sparingly.

I have tried to make a dvd of old music videos, TV shows and esp my old Hi8 and other camcorder videos.

Although it used to work, but not play too well on other dvd players in the house and also not on computers, the dvd would play on my Pioneer Elite DV 47 Ai.

I turned it on and started recording the 2nd half of the recent Super Bowl- when I got home, the recorder menu read "blank disc" or "end of disc" and I could not get a menu on the disc to finalize.

I then tried a short dvd (manual says sometimes it's too short to read), but now menu says "unknown data on disc." No way to back up to disc menu. On this 2nd disc, I went through each step exactly as printed in the manual and finalized, which took about 2 minutes to accomplish. In the past, Philips support is essentially non existent.

What should I do? Junk the effort and use it as a spare dvd and cd player, which is what I am inclined to do?

I want an excuse to buy a reasonable DVDR under $250 perhaps. How about one of the combi units with both good VCR hi fi (maybe even S-VHS) and DVDR? We're using a nice looking unit from Panasonic at work. Suggestion?
