"is it really neccessary…?"

No.

Would you notice a difference? That's a different question and depends on the quality of the cables involved.

Is the difference worth the cost? Once again, that depends on the cables involved and how important getting any difference you notice is to you. There's no single yes/no answer that everyone will agree with, but it also has to be said up front that not all differences are necessarily improvements.

My feeling is that if you have to ask this sort of question, the best answer for you is "not at present". See how you go with what you've got for a few months and decide whether you want to chase something different at that stage. If you do, see if you can borrow a few different HDMI cables (invite a few people over for an evening and tell them to bring their cables) and do some comparisons before you decide to spend any money.

When I bought my LCD TV, my dealer gave me a HDMI cable which I used for a while. Then on a whim I bought a Kimber since I use Kimber cables in my audio system, and I saw a small but nice difference. The Kimber cables definitely weren't the most expensive around and I now use 3 in my system and I'm happy with the results but I think a lot of people might not notice the difference I did, or if they did notice it would not think it was worth buying the cables whereas I thought it was worth buying them. Value for money is always a personal decision and one man's value is often another's extravagance.

Bottom line: your HDMI cable choice can make a difference but whether you like the difference or think it's worth the cost are questions you need to answer for yourself.
