RE: HDMI switching receiver-will it pass through sound to the TV if the receiver is off?

Probably not, and video probably won't pass through either if you're going to use the receiver for HDMI switching. The receiver probably actually needs to be on in order for throughpass to occur.

BUT-

How do you receive your TV signal? If you watch free to air, run an antenna cable to the TV's antenna input and you don't need to turn the receiver on if you're going to use the TV's own speakers.

If you're using a cable box or set top box or other external device, does it have 2 outputs of one kind or another? If so, feed one output to the receiver and the other to a different input on your TV to the one your receiver sends the video to. Select your source input rather than the receiver when you want to watch the news. You may need to use analog or a digital connection other than HDMI in order to do this but it's easily done. You may notice some loss of quality if you need to use some sort of video connection other than component of HDMI but that may not worry you for the news and an occasional program. If you're lucky your source box may have 2 HDMI outs so you can use one HDMI connection to the receiver and the other to the TV. If there's only 1 HDMI output, run it to the receiver and use a different output for the TV connection. You may have to "tell" your source box which output to use when you want to swap outputs.
