Viewing Distance from 58" Plasma

I've just been given (as an early Xmas bonus) a 58" Panasonic Plasma (S series).

What is the optimal viewing distance or viewing range for a 1080p plasma TV?

I know about the Carlton Bale chart (see below). What I want is actual viewer experience on the matter.

I will put this plasma in a bedroom that is 11' wide. It will be on a stand (not wall mounted), so subtract 1' from the far wall, and assuming I sit in a chair or on a couch, subtract another 1' from the back wall. So I guess I can sit as far back as 9' from the screen.

Does anyone have this situation, or one close enough to provide some viewing experience impressions?

I know that "bigger is better" in general. But viewing distance and size of room (the room is a bedroom, 11' across, and about 13' the other dimension [note: no blank walls in the 13' dimension, so plasma has got to go in the 11' dimension).

I'm going to get a chunk of cardboard to simulate the size of the 58" plasma (56" X 34") to try to get a feel for the physical size of this plasma TV in the viewing room.

The short version of this is: I could get a 54" instead of the 58". I don't want the sensation of sitting too close to the screen. I will go check out a 58" in a store and stand 9' from screen. But that's in a much bigger room, if you know what I mean.

Thanks for any help. This IS a problem I can work through!
