stupid question on sub hookup

I'm just a two channel guy but I gave my spare sub (standard high and low level inputs, right and left channels)to a friend who is building a HT system. Since his HT receiver has a sub output (single RCA jack), does one simply hook that to either of the two RCA jacks on the back and call it good? I also have a "Y" adapter that could utilize both channel inputs, if needed.

Tangential - do the HT receivers have less subwoofer-level signal in the R and L front channels, which would preclude taking sub input from there?

Finally, if playing music cd's (2 channel), does that sub output probably still carry signal?

Thanks in advance. Gonna go play a record or something now.
