You should check your internet speed. Netflix streaming players run at a lower resolution if the available bandwidth won't allow HD. Try running the test at speedtest.net, making sure that you run it on a PC that's connected to your home network in the same fashion as your streaming player (in other words, either wireless or ethernet-wired). My internet connection is generally between 10-15 Mbps and I almost always am getting a very good hi-def picture (when the source is HD). On a few occasions, the picture has dropped down to lower-res for a moment or two.
