We'll I received the CA DVD89 on 28 Dec 2010....all I can say is WOW!

Very nice standard def DVD player. I previously owned a Cambridge Audio DVD55. Purchased that unit in 2003 or 2004...was wanting to replace it this year with a universal standard def DVD player (HDMI output/SACD/DVD-A capable). The old CA DVD55 was not giving me any trouble...I just think it was getting long in the tooth.

I noticed a jump in mostly Audio quality right away....My current system has a vintage Yamaha RX V690 (Analog Inputs only). I have the analog outputs of the CA DVD89(Standard Def) and a Sony BDP S360 (Blue Ray) running into the receiver.

I compared a Standard Def DVD of the James Bond movie "Quantum of Solace" on both players. I used the opening car chase scene and intro theme song by Jack White for reference. The audio from the Sony BDP S360 was in a word "subdued" or lacking dynamic range. The sub machine gunfire fire and car chase engine noise was kind of laid back...like watching a conventional TV broadcast of a film. The same scene on the CA DVD89 was engaging...emotional intense, frightening. Needless to say the Jack White intro song was much better on the CA unit.

I am very pleased with my purchase and am certainly convinced that the Analog outputs on the CA DVD89 are much better than the Analog outs on the Sony BDP S360.

Latter this year...I will purchase another receiver to replace my vintage Yamaha RX V690 (been with me since 1993)...and then I can run the HDMI outputs into an HDMI equipped Home Theater Receiver. It will be interesting to see what results I get then.
