'The 12th Man': More fighting the ice and cold . . .

Posted by Billy Wonka on May 12, 2019 at 18:23:04:

This really happened.

Twelve Norwegian resistance fighters who trained in England set sail in a small fishing vessel with munitions and plans to bomb and disrupt specific occupation forces targets. No sooner than they arrive they are met by two unexpected German naval vessels. Mayhem ensues, their ship is sunk, and they manage to make it to shore without anything. Over time, eleven of the team members are killed at the hands of the Germans while only Jan Baalsrud manages to escape and evade with the help of Norwegians who do their best to get him across to neutral Sweden. Baalsrud is injured and plagued by frostbite and gangrene that incapacitates him requiring him to be carried along. The spirit of resistance among the local Norwegians causes them to risk all to get this "symbol" back to England and outrun the number one Gestapo agent, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who "always gets his man".

A compelling film and study of people's willingness to sacrifice for the greater good. Neither the Nazis nor Norwegian snow and ice could discourage them.

wonks: 3 out of 5 for compelling storytelling of real history
wanks: 1.5 out of 5 for lackluster cast and script
