I didn't keep up, I think I was sixteen or seventeen at the time. One can say, if you ditch a deluxe pad in the hollywood hills so that the wrong crowd doesn't come around anymore, that is one wrong crowd.

I'm guessing the murders were a power trip, the guy was sore he didn't get a record deal, and took revenge at an old address in error, but had to dress it up as some cosmic insight super plan, so it wouldn't stink like plain old murder to his followers.
