Film noir must-see: "The Chase." Bob Cummings shows he

really is a good and versatile actor in this role where he becomes infatuated with his gangster boss's wife: later on in his career, Cummings became a ham; here, he's understated and sympathetic.
Michele Morgan, unfortunately unknown today, smolderingly portrays the wronged and abused wife. Steve Cochran (who took no back-seat to Errol Flynn in the debauchery league) is excellent--- his portrayal of the thug is memorable. He once said that the key to playing criminals is to not acknowledge that they feel they're doing wrong: he admirably succeeds. You almost--- almost-- pity him.Peter Lorre rounds out this most excellent cast; yes, he plays a slightly deranged killer, a role he should have patented.
Note: Morgan was held in such high esteem that she most probably would have had the role immortalized by Ingrid Bergman in, "Casablance," had her studio agreed to release her.
