with some of the more realistic war scenes you've ever seen. Several platoons of former criminals become skilled at silent, throat-slashing nighttime attacks against the Turks and Germans. This hand-to-hand combat, wherein no prisoners are taken, takes a toll on them off the battlefield where, finally, their violent crimes against civilians cannot be tolerated by commanding officers. Consider this more of a thinking man's war film and you should find much to like, including the startlingly realistic performance of the lead, Philippe Torreton.
