Back to the movie theater to see Nic Cage

The last movie I saw in a theater was Little Women, New Year's Eve as 2020 was starting. In a few months, businesses closed and I never got back until today.

The movie is The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, starring one of my own all time favorites, Nic Cage. It riffs off of his reputation, as he plays himself as a self-absorbed, cash-strapped famous actor named Nic Cage. It goes in unexpected directions and is, all in all, entertaining, but what it lacks is his all-out go-for-broke craziness. So it's not in my top tier of his many movies (I've certainly not seen them all), but as a fan, it was a must-see.

The return to a movie theater was great. During the closures, I upped my home video game, got into 4K, which can be really good. I saw movies like The Wizard of Oz, which I saw as a kid many times on CRT screens, and of course, the 4K is a revelation of details and richness that made it new for me again. But there is nothing like a theater experience. The screen is larger, the disturbances are pretty much gone, you cannot indulge the temptation to stop the movie to go get a snack or rewind if you did not hear a word. It is, in brief, just more immersive and more special. So I'm back. Unfortunately, my local indie/foreign theater is still closed and I doubt it will ever be back.
