I recently revisited this film on Netflix. This is one of the best films I know of. The filming as a period piece (1948 Los Angeles) is spectacular; people resettling just after WWII. The colors are warm and washed, "antiqued", giving the viewing a sense of sunny SoCal and of being historic. The settings, old cars and urban streets, are authentic in every detail. The mannerisms of the characters draw you back in time. Racial color lines and wealth segregation are in full display in this film, figuring prominently into the story line as causes for the events.
The story is from the first book in a series of Easy Rawlins mysteries by author Walter Mosley. It won awards for being one of the best of its genre. Rawlins is played by Denzel Washington. Other characters portrayed by Tom Sizemore, Don Cheadle, Jennifer Beals. Sizemore was known for making a chilling smirk that looked absolutely deadly. Cheadle won acclaim for playing a sociopathic killer.
I'm amazed at how good of a film this is after rewatching; classified as neo-noir.
