It's years since I saw the original movie and my memory is not brilliant for detailed comparisons. As Duilwayer noted, the narration is different and that was the big thing I noticed. I can't remember what was in the narration or how well/badly it was done but I do remember it being there and the Director's Cut originally felt funny without it. I think the Director's Cut adds a brief dream sequence that I find totally irrelevant.

It's been too long since I've seen the original for me to be able to say which is best but the Director's Cut is fine and I really enjoy being able to see this film again after many years.
