"Only the Lonely"

Posted by rico on August 19, 2007 at 04:05:33:

John Candy stars in this gentle and funny fantasy about a 38 year old veteran Chicago cop who lives with his bigoted Irish-American mother (Maureen O'hara). She cooks for him, makes his bed, and does his laundry. She also pretty much runs his life. Periodically they visit a local Irish pub and banter with the denizens there. When Candy spies the daughter of a local undertaker (Aly Sheedy) he visits the funeral home and asks her out. A romance develops and what could be worse than Sheedy not only being a potential wife but also being Sicilian? Meanwhile, the mother is pursued by a greek gardener played in his Zorba best by Anthony Quinn. Jim Belusho plays Candy's cop partner. Chris columbus wrote and directed this warm and genuinely funny film. Recommended for all ages, even if you don;t like Candy.
