blast! It has K's usual manic qualities, the camera and action never pausing to catch its breath, and rides to success on the coattails of the three marvelous principals. When is the last time you've seen a movie with 3 superb performances? And in a rich comedy (or satire, to be more accurate)?
The film tells the story of war profiteer friends, one of whom is duped into remaining underground, literally, even though the war is ended. He believes it continues on and his friend continues the false impression, keeping him there for decades.
It is tough to make an ironic work of art when reality is so much zanier, which is the case with the former Yugoslavian republic. Still, for its zest, human tidal wave of feeling, good-naturedness, and overall fun quotient, I'd recommend it. It did win, after all, Best Film (Palm d'Or) at Cannes some years back.
