Believe it or not, I actually got to interview him.

I was working at a radio station near Monaco in the mid 1980s and was lucky enough to arrange an interview with him after one of his performances in Nice. I was young and inexperienced, and he was sweet, patient, and (no pun intended) soft spoken. There was not an ounce of arrogance in the man. We spent about an hour talking about his craft, and it left quite an impression on me.

Sad to learn of his passing.
