Choice between Elizabeth, Lions for Lambs and Jesse James

Posted by DavidLD on November 11, 2007 at 12:22:04:

I went for Elizabeth: the Golden Age. Flawed but actually a pretty good movie. THe major complaint is that some of the historical details are distorted if not outright wrong.
I think I picked the best of the three movies and given the reviews here on the other two, I may skip both.

Actually I've been having more fun wathing Star Trek II, III, IV and V in my home theater. I had forgotten how good these movies are. In many respects they are closer to pure fun than Star Wars movies, which tend to take themselves too seriously. The basic questions that haunt me about Star Wars are 1. Why did these two groups hate eich other so much given what appear to be almost trivial bureaucratic issues that separated them (trade disagreements etc) Nothing seems serious enough to go to war over; and 2. Maybe the Jedi force wasn't all sweetness and light, and good wasn't always good nor evil always evil. It stikes me that the Jedi represent the US and the Empire represents whoever the US doesn't like at the moment for whatever reason. And we are taught that the US is always right and whoever opposes the US is always wrong regardless of the circumstances.

I wonder how the world would be different now had the Spanish Armada won and made England a Catholic country. We in the US would all now be speaking Spanish for sure, not just some of us LOL. Heck, in what ways would the universe be different had the Empire not the Jedi won? What would the US really be like now had Germany/Japan won WW II? Would Germany and Japan had any better luck running the US as an occupied colony than the British did? I suspect the situation would have quickly fallen apart once the practical problems of occupying the US were confronted.

Enough weighty thoughts for one Sunday!

David
