The semi - happy ending was phony as the happy ending tacked on to Bladerunner in its original release. Let me rephrase that - the ending of I Am Legend is so stupid, illogical, and insulting to the audience that it ruined the movie for me. Hell, I left the theater wanting to drive to LA to hunt down the screenwriter so I could yell at him. The survivors' camp in Vermont is explained away with an off - hand remark that the "virus couldn't handle the cold." If Vermont is cold enough to kill off the virus then why didn't everyone in New Hampshire, Maine, upstate New York, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Alaska, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, and Mongolia survive the virus too? Vermont isn't the coldest place on earth, yet everyone on the planet was killed by the virus except for those in a small pocket of the Green Mountain State. Right.
