Agreed. The director has to be blamed for the inconsistent quality of the performances. The movie had most of everything needed to carry it the distance. I think it could and should have been better. Disappointed a bit, but I too thought it was interesting and entertaining.

"the guy who get's the spear for a while", if he is the character with the name something like "Tik Tik" - I remember him from "Training Day". I think he has a natural gift of delivering a strong on-screen presence.
