Yes, the expected occurs and common sense is murdered.
Signoret hardly has the fire to make us believe she'd lose her head so easily. Interestingly, the film's villain is not credited, even though he has immense star quality (help Patrick! Who is he?). I'd see this film if you're at all a Francophile: the long opening tracking shot of the Rhone in Lyons is worth the price of admission as are the frequent appearances of the downtown and boulevards of that wonderful and neglected city.
