A great film and a standard for the genre. It's almost perfectly directed AND perfectly cast. I cannot imagine anyone else in the Steve McQueen role, except maybe the great Belmondo. I can think of only two American films, "The French Connection" and maybe "The Seven Ups" which are as well done and exciting.
Most of todays cop/action/chase movies owe a great debt to Peter Yates and Steve McQueen. 40 years later, their effort has yet to be topped.
