My 5 1/2 year old son watched BTT with me, and enjoyed it enough for my wife to buy it on D.V.D. I do not think he 'got' the end in terms of the tragedy.

I think he enjoyed the Golden Compass more, which, with witches, talking bears, flying ships, and little animal companions, is darker, but more visually stimulating for younger kids. My three old also enjoyed GC for those reasons.
