Speaking of morality. . .

My wife's take on the film was that she hated the morality of it - that nice old man (Jacke) getting killed, Virginia going into spontaneous combustion, etc. - all to allow for the survival of Eli. She claimed the moral and heroic thing for Eli to do would be to expose her(?)self to the sun and burn up like Virginia!
As for me, I was deeply impressed by the sadness of it all, and I found the ending to be disturbing, as Oskar rides the train, settling into his new role as Eli's "keeper". The director says the movie has a happy ending. I just can't see that interpretation. Nevertheless, this was definitely the best film of last year (at least of the ones I've seen so far).
