'Two Lovers'

I recommend this recent film directed by James Grey: convincing naturalistic dialogue and quite excellent understated performances by a cast that includes Joaquin Phoenix, Gwyneth Paltrow, Isabella Rossellini and Vinessa Shaw. Set in a Russian Jewish community in Brighton Beach NY, the plot has few real surprises but is no worse for that, a 'satisfactory' narrative without seeming trite. Not a 'big' film but very worthwhile.

Wikipedia mentions its being loosely based on Dostoievsky's story 'White Nights', which also inspired Visconti, Bresson and others.
